Since the demise of President Nixon over thirty years ago, there has been a gathering storm of mistrust between
the American people and their political representatives. The checks and balances provided in the Constitution
created the Executive, Legislative and Judicial branches of government to assure that no one area of government
abused its power. We learned during Watergate the critical role the media played by providing the fourth safeguard,
the free press.

Today we find ourselves immersed in both man made and natural disasters. The expectation of the American
people is that their elected officials will protect them. In reality we’ve seen the response to disasters and wars has
had critical shortfalls. The fiasco of Hurricane Katrina and the nine eleven attacks have caused Americans to doubt
their safety. The voter’s belief that politicians’ promises guarantee them a secure environment has been shattered.

Killer Across the Ocean brings into focus how the media has become an essential ingredient assuring Americans
that their government is being scrutinized. No longer will we allow our political representatives free reign without
answering to us for their actions or non-actions. The story illuminates our vulnerability when we become complacent
during a hurricane threat in South Florida.
